Abstract

1,189,404. Extruding cavitied products. SCHNEIDER & CO. 2 Feb., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 5326/68. Heading B5A. An extruded product having a multiplicity of parallel and longitudinally extending cavities is made by forcing material by means of a piston 7 through tubes 8, secured against movement in the extrusion direction by collars 8<SP>11</SP> which bear on bushes 3, through lateral holes in tubes 8 immediately downstream of bushes 3 and then around the closed downstream ends of the tubes. Typical widths of the cavities are between 0À5 and 5 mm. and their cross-sections depend on those of the closed tube ends. The tubes are easily replaceable and, as shown, some tubes 8 have been replaced by tubes 8<SP>1</SP>. Bushes 3 are brazed, soldered or adhesively bonded together to form an apertured plate and this plate is surrounded by a support 4 carrying an annular die 9. The extrudate cross-section may be varied by changing die 9 and/or blocking-off some of the tubes or bushes, e.g. by plates (10), Fig. 3 (not shown), or plugs (11), and a tubular extrudate may be obtained by blocking- off the centrally disposed bushes, Fig. 5 (not shown). Extrudable materials mentioned are ceramics such as clay and curable synthetic resins or mixtures of clay and such resins.
