Abstract
1,139,588. Graft polymer compositions. BORGWARNER CORP. 17 Feb., 1966 [26 Feb., 1965], No. 7088/66. Heading C3G. A composite thermoplastic homogeneous resin blend comprises (1) 10-50% by weight of polymethyl methacrylate, (2) 15-30% by weight of a graft polymer prepared by polymerizing a mixture of acrylonitrile, or an α-substituted derivative thereof, and a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a prepolymerized conjugated-diene rubber in latex form and having a particle size in excess of 1600 Š, (3) from 5-30% by weight of a graft polymer prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture as defined in (2) above in the presence of a prepolymerized conjugated-diene rubber, or conjugated diene-monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon copolymer rubber, in latex form and the size of a predominant proportion of the rubber being in the range 500-700 A, and (4) 20-60% by weight of a copolymer of a monomer mixture as defined in (2) above. The α-substituted acrvlonitrile may be methacrylonitrile, ethacrylonitrile or chloroacrylonitrile; the monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon is preferably styrene and/or α- methylstyrene; and the conjugated diene is preferably butadiene but may also be isoprene, piperylene, dimethylbutadiene or chloroprene. The diene rubber used in component (3) may also include a minor proportion of units of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl stearate, vinyl naphthalene or methyl vinyl ether, and units of a cross-linking monomer such as divinylbenzene. In preparing the blend of the polymer components (1)-(4) there may be included a small proportion of calcium stearate or a polyoxyalkylene derivative of propylene glycol. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 991,315 and 991,316.
