Copolymers of sulphur dioxide with one or more unsaturated hydrocarbons containing at least 3 carbon atoms are prepared by forming a suspension of the sulphur dioxide and unsaturated hydrocarbon monomers in an aqueous medium by means of 0.1 to 2 % by weight of a colloid, based on the unsaturated hydrocarbons, and copolymerizing the comonomers in the presence of a catalyst which is soluble in the monomers and under the pressure generated by the reaction medium. In the examples are used 1-butene, propene, ethyl maleate, styrene, acrylonitrile, allyl bromide; ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose; isopropyl peroxydicarbonate and lauroyl peroxide; tertiary dodecyl mercaptan; methyl phthalate. Vinyl toluene, vinyl xylenes, butyl phthalate and butyl phosphate may also be used. The polymer beads may be dried to give porous beads.
