Abstract

1,139,204. Joint making packing. GOETZEWERKE FRIEDRICH GOETZE A.G. 16 May, 1966 [14 May, 1965; 11 June, 1965; 3 Aug., 1965; 15 Sept., 1965], No. 21595/66. Heading F2B. A cylinder head gasket comprises a closecoiled helical garter spring 2 at least half of which is enclosed by an annular jacket 3 of metal or synthetic material. The gasket in use, may be located in a recess 4 in the cylinder block 5. In a modification, Fig. 4, the gasket 20 comprises a flat part 21 of a soft material covered by two metal layers 21, 23, one of which has an extension 24 surrounding the garter spring 2. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the soft material part (26) is reinforced by a part (25) having a C-shaped extension (27) enclosing the spring (2). In a still further modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the spring (2) is precompressed to an elliptical form. The jacket 3 may comprise a hard resilient core (39), Fig. 9 (not shown), coated on both sides with soft material (40, 41).
