Abstract
1,138,979. Separators for secondary cells. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 19 May, 1966 [4 June, 1965], No. 22242/66. Heading H1B. A separator for use between the electrodes of a secondary cell comprises particles of zirconium or hafnium oxide in a binder of polytetrafluoroethylene. The weight ratio of oxide to polymer is preferably between 3 and 10, the oxide particles preferably have a mesh size (U.S. Standard Mesh) of 25 to 100 and the specific gravity of the polymer is preferably from 2À13 to 2À25. A button form of a sealed alkaline cell is shown comprising two positive plates 11 and 12 of nickel joined by conducting strip 15 and two negative plates 13 and 14 of cadmium joined by conducting strip 16. Between the electrodes are separators 17 according to the invention and the whole assembly is enclosed in a sealed casing comprising a metal bottom part 18 and a metal lid 19. The bottom and lid are sealed with a resilient insulating gasket 20. The preferred electrolyte is KOH at concentrations of 20 to 45%.
