Abstract

1,138,807. Aircraft power plant. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 5 June, 1967, No. 25774/67. Heading B7G. An aircraft having main engines for forward propulsion has an auxiliary engine to provide power for the operation of all the electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment carried by the aircraft, which auxiliary engine alone is arranged to provide reverse thrust for the aircraft. Main gas turbine engines 11 mounted on wings (not shown) have starter devices 12 supplied with compressed air from a common line 13 and valve 14, line 13 being connected also by lines 15 and valves 16 to receive air from the engine compressors. An auxiliary gas turbine engine 20 mounted in the tail of the aircraft (not shown) drives a main compressor 21 connected through control valve 22 to line 13 and pressure regulator 24 to line 25 which supplies compressed air to all the pneumatic equipment carried by the aircraft. Two branch lines 26 provided with valves 27 connect line 13 to constant speed turbines 30 which drive alternators (not shown) to provide power for all the electrical services; and hydraulic pumps (not shown) to provide power for all the hydraulic services. Should engine 20 fail all services can be maintained by the main engines supplying compressed air through lines 15. The engine 20 may assist in forward propulsion of the aircraft and may have provision for thrust reversing. In an alternative embodiment all of the engines drive independent compressors, the outputs of which are fed to a common reducing and mixing regulator.
