Abstract

1,138,522. Fused electrolyte aluminium reduction cell. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. Jan. 6, 1966 [Jan. 6, 1965], No. 578/65. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic reduction cell for the production of aluminium, e.g. using a cryolitealumina bath, having as cathode a pool of molten aluminium of a depth less than 2 inches with a horizontal surface supported by a substantially level floor, the floor surface is composed of a material which is wettable by molten aluminium, has an electrical conductivity at least as good as carbon, a resistance to attack by molten aluminium and other cell constituents at least as good as carbon and an expansion of less than 3% under cell operating conditions, and contains at least 5% by weight of calcined carbon mixed with at least 20% by weight of at least one of the refractory hard metals in the group consisting of the carbides, borides, silicides and nitrides of the transition metals of the Periodic Groups 4, 5, 6 (excluding chromium). As shown the cell comprises a base 1 of thermal insulating brick supporting a layer 2 of firebrick and walls 5 of alumina lined with carbon bricks 6. Steel cathode bus-bars 3 are supported on the firebrick and a layer 4 of rammed and fired carbon is applied over and between them. Successive layers of graded carbon- RHM mixes, the RHM being preferably 70% by weight TiB 2 and 30% by weight TiC, are then applied, the first layer containing 30% by weight RHM, the second layer containing 60% RHM, and the third (top) layer containing 90% RHM, the balance in each case being carbon e.g. anthracite or petroleum coke with a pitch binder. A tapping depression 9 is provided in the floor for a tapping spout through which molten aluminium is sucked out from the pool 14. The distance between the carbon anodes 10 and the aluminium pool is preferably less than 1À75 inches and may be as little as 0À25 inch.
