In a system for detecting the passage of a person or object along a passageway, a light source and light receiver are installed together at one side of the passageway, a reflector and modulator being arranged at the other side of the passageway so as to reflect chopped (or modulated) light back to the receiver. The modulator may be a rotating perforated disc or may operate (in unspecified manner) by changing the plane of polarization. The receiver is arranged (in unspecified manner) to give a signal in the absence of light with the particular modulation.
