Abstract

1,137,653. Densified particulate nitrocellulose. HERCULES Inc. 11 Jan., 1967, No. 1628/67. Heading C3A. Densified, finely-particulate nitrocellulose is made by (a) forming a slurry substantially free of fibre aggregates by agitation of fibrous nitrocellulose which is substantially water-free in a mixture of a hydrocarbon diluent and an organic nitrocellulose solvent which is soluble in the diluent to the extent of at least 2À5% by weight, said mixture being capable of softening but not dissolving the fibres, (b) subjecting the slurry to shear agitation whereby the fibres are softened and swollen and break down into particles, (c) initiating hardening of the particles by diluting the slurry with a hydrocarbon diluent while continuing the shear agitation, and (d) removing substantially all of the solvent by distillation in the presence of excess hydrocarbon diluent to complete the densification and hardening. In one embodiment high shear agitation is used to produce particles in the size range 15-150Á and a density of 1À58-1À62 g/c.c.; in another embodiment a water-soluble protective colloid (preferably 0À1-0À2%) is added at stage (b), mild shearing agitation is used, and the final particle size is 150-600Á with a density of 1À3- 1À38 g/c.c. Heptane is the preferred hydrocarbon using methyl ethyl ketone or acetone as solvent, and gum arabic or methyl cellulose as colloid. Long lists of alternatives are given. The starting nitrocellulose is preferably subjected to a fibre-beating step before step (a) and may have an N-content of 10À9-13À5%.
