Styrene polymers containing tert. -butyl groups are produced by alkylating a solution of a styrene polymer with 0À25-1 mole (per mole of monomer(s) in the polymer) of tert.-butyl chloride in the presence of gaseous boron trifluoride as catalyst at 20-40‹ C. The polymer may be polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene with α-methylstyrene. The solvent for the polymer may be carbon disulphide, nitromethane or methylene or ethylene chloride.
