Abstract

1,137,423. Rubber latex foams. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 28 June, 1966 [30 June, 1965], No. 29005/66. Headings C3C, C3P and C3Q. A rubber latex foam is prepared by frothing an aqueous latex of the rubber containing 10-100% by weight (based on the rubber) of a polyisocyanate into a foam and then gelling, curing and drying the foam. Suitable rubber latices are those obtained by emulsion polymerization of conjugated diolefins, e.g. isoprene, butadiene, chloroprene and copolymers with styrene, acrylo- and methacrylonitrile and vinyl acetate and those obtained by solution polymerization of, e.g. isoprene, butadiene, isobutylene. In the Examples (1) a neoprene latex is compounded with petrolatum, ZnO, sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate, phenyl-betanaphthylamine, trialkyl thiourea, (2) as (1) with additionally thiocarbanilide, sulphur and lignin sulphonate, (3) styrene-butadiene copolymer latex, natural rubber latex, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer latex or an ethylene /propylene/1,4-hexadiene latex is compounded with potassium oleate, sulphur, tetraethyl thiuram disulphide, zinc salt of mercaptobenzothiazole, thiocarbanilide, 2,21-methylene-bis-4- methyl-6-tert.-butyl phenol, the reaction product of ethyl chloride, formaldehyde and ammonia, ZnO and styrenated phenol, and then treated as above. Suitable polyisocyanates, which are preferably added prior to gelation, are 2,4- and/or 2,6-toluene di-isocyanates, 4,41- methylene - bis - (phenylisocyanate), mphenylene di-isocyanate, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene-bis- (cyclohexyl isocyanate), decamethylene di-isocyanate and PAP1. Gelling agents used are sodium and potassium silicofluorides; these may also contain a foam stabilizer. The latex is foamed by whipping.
