Abstract

1,137,339. Extruding foamed polyvinyl chloride. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 16 Aug., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 37716/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C3] In the extrusion of films, sheets, rods or pipes of foamed polyvinyl chloride, the working temperature and pressure conditions within a single shaft extruder are as follows: (a) a polymer temperature of 170-230‹ C. under a pressure of at least 150 atm. immediately upstream of mixing zone 7, (b) a pressure of at least 50 atm. at the downstream end of cooling zone 8, (c) a pressure of at least 15 atm. just upstream of extrusion orifice 5, and (d) a temperature of 80-135‹ C. at the extrusion orifice. Mixing zone 7 comprises an inlet 2 for the injection of a liquid blowing agent whose normal boiling-point is below 100‹ C. The average residence time of the material between inlet 2 and the downstream end of cooling zone 8 is 1-7 mins. The extruder comprises a screw flight 10 on a tapered shaft 9 forming a plasticizing zone 6, and mixing zone 7 comprises collars 12 with axial or helical peripheral grooves terminated upstream by a throttle 11. Alternatively, collars 12 may be replaced by rounded projections. Cooling zone 8 comprises a stirrer 14 provided with blades 15 and cooling is by contact of the material with the barrel wall. If required, however, cooling and heating elements may be accommodated in the barrel and shaft 9. To the polymer may be added up to 5% by weight of a conventional plasticizer, 10-25% by weight of a blowing agent and 1-2% by weight of a nucleating agent. Numerous stabilizers, blowing and nucleating agents are listed and four examples are given in which the blowing agent is acetone. A preferred foam product has a density less than 0.3 g/ml. and an average cell diameter less than 0.05 cm.
