Abstract
1,137,199. Magnetic storage apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 27 Nov., 1967 [29 Dec., 19661, No. 53757/67. Heading H3B. In a storage matrix in which orthogonal word conductors 16 and digit conductors 20 are associated with parallel strips 14 of anisotropic magnetic thin film material, the word conductors are positioned immediately adjacent to and parallel with the strips and the arrangement is overlaid by a keeper plate 22 of non- remanent magnetic material. The strips are deposited on a coated substrate 10 and each have an easy magnetization axis 15 in the longitudinal direction of the strip. An external magnetic biasing field is applied by coils 26 which biases the magnetization of each strip towards the hard direction. The word and digit conductors are separated by insulation strips 18, the word conductors being connected to a word select and drive circuit 30, and the digit conductors connected either to a digit select and drive circuit 40 or to loads 42 by switches 34, 36. Operation to write or sense a binary digit in a discrete portion of a strip is effected by overlapping pulses in the usual manner. The arrangement is stated to reduce creep in unselected storage portions by using a lower word drive current and having a reduced stray field.
