Abstract

1,137,175. Embossing; ornamenting. EDWARD WEBSTER Ltd. 24 April, 1967 [25 Oct., 1966], No. 47809/66. Headings B6G and B6J. The curved surface of a thermoplastic article is simultaneously embossed and coated with decorative material, e.g. gold or silver, in the embossed areas by bringing the curved surface of the article into rolling engagement with a heated embossing die through an interposed sheet or strip of paper or other flexible carrier coated on the side next to the article with a transferable layer of the decorative material. The articles may be supported on rotatable mandrels 18 mounted on a disc 14 rotatable to bring each successive article on its mandrel into rolling engagement with a heated arcuate die 19 adjustable towards and away from the mandrel by micrometer screw 28. Flexible carrier 36 bearing a coating of decorative material is supplied from a spool held by spring clip 43, around spaced pins 45, over brake roller 46 and up to driven scrap winding reel 47. The movement of carrier 36 is momentarily arrested while a cover is in engagement with the die. Probe 53 stops the machine if a mandrel against which it presses does not carry an article. The decorated articles are removed from mandrels 18 by rotating, waisted, rubber covered, ejector roller 54.
