Abstract

[Also in Division H1] In an electronic flash unit comprising a plurality of series-connected discharge lamps la - 1a apparatus is provided for varying the gas content of at least one of the lamps. As shown, the lamps are connected in pairs to conduits 8e, 8f supplied with gas from cylinders 9, 10 through 3-way valves 12, 13 which also provide access to the ambient atmosphere and, together with a trigger device 5, are connected to a control unit 11. Reflectors 6a - 6d provide fields of illumination 7a-7d which by varying the pressure or nature of the lamp fillings may provide even illumination of large objects, e.g. lamps 1a and 1a which illuminate the more distant parts may be filled with helium to emit a more penetrating red light, while lamps 1b and 1c are filled with krypton.
