Abstract

1,136,755. Uniting threads by adhesives. VAL. MEHLER A.G. 2 Dec., 1965 [4 Dec., 1964], No. 24335/68. Divided out of 1,136,754. Heading D1R. A cord ply for reinforcing resilient plastics or rubber, e.g. for reinforcing pneumatic tyres, conveyor belts or driving belts, comprises a number of parallel filaments 10 adherently held together by connectors 11 which extend transversely to the filament direction, which do not touch each other at least for the greater part of their length, and which consist at least partly of thermoplastic material and are firmly stuck through thermal softening to the filaments 10 at the points of contact, each connector 11 extending on one side of the cord ply. In one embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the cord ply comprises rayon filaments (1) which are held by polyethylene filaments (2) of smaller cross-section than the filaments (1). To produce the cord ply, the filaments (1) are ordered by a weaving comb and guided over a support. The filaments (2) are pressed individually or in groups onto the filaments (1) by a ram heated above the the softening temperature of the filaments (2) so that the filaments (2) are flattened at the crossing points. This operation may be effected by a device comprising two conveyor chains extending transversely of the filaments (1) and which have grippers. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) loosely woven strips (4) are stuck to the cord filaments (3) by thermal softening. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) a coarse mesh woven net comprising thermoplastic connector filaments (6) and warp filaments (7), which latter need not be of thermoplastic material, is applied to the cord filaments (5) by welding. The net may be drawn from a reel and placed on the moving filaments (5). In a still further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), tangled dry fibres (9) which are at least partly of thermoplastic material are blown onto or applied in fleece form to the cord filaments (8). Slight pressure is applied to the fibres (9) by a heated roller or bar. Alternatively, a thermoplastic fibre fleece is applied by heat softening between heated rolls before the filaments (8) are dipped. In another embodiment, Figs. 5 (not shown) and 6, thin polyethylene strips 11 are bonded to the filaments 10 by heat softening. In other embodiments (not shown), the connector layer comprises a highly porous tissue paper, e.g. manila hemp; the connectors are very thin and are disposed on both sides of the cord ply; or, for reinforcing conveyor belts, the connector filaments have a larger cross-section than the cord-ply filaments. The cord ply filaments may be multifilaments, monofilaments, yarns or threads and may be of natural fibres, glass fibres, metal wires or synthetic filaments, e.g. rayon or polyamide.
