Abstract

1,136,732. Filaments or shot of alumina or zircon; centrifugal apparatus. BRUNSWICK CORP. 29 April, 1966, No. 19009/66. Headings C1A and C1M. To form filaments or shot of inorganic non- glass-former material, particles thereof are heated to a temperature in excess of 2000‹ C. to melt them to a liquid mass which is centrifuged to form filaments, which are retained in filament form or caused to break up into shot. An apparatus for forming the filaments comprises a hollow rotor 30 mounted on a horizontal axis, a feeding device 110 for depositing unmelted batch on an internal wall of the rotor, drive means for rotating the rotor at velocities in excess of 30,000 r.p.m. and is characterized by electric arc-heating means (i.e. two electrodes 80, 81) within the rotor to melt the batch and by the melted batch cooling to form a lip around the periphery of the opening in the side of the rotor over which other molten batch is flung by centrifugal force. The rotor is composed of a series of parts 31, 33-37 joined together and insulated one from another, an internal insulating lining 130 and a turbine blade 32 upon which high pressure air acts to drive the rotor. Air for the turbine is provided from an annular conduit surrounding the rotor. To prevent the rotor deforming under the heat of melting, cooling water is directed upon its external surfaces through pipes and conduits 122, 124, 125, 127, 128, 129. Air under pressure is introduced along the axis of the rotor between the electrodes to cyclically lengthen the arc path. Filaments formed as the molten material is flung out of the rotor are collected in a concentrically mounted rotating drum which is filled with a suitable cooling fluid. A control means is included to feed the electrodes to the rotor as they burn down. Particular materials referred to are zircon and alumina.
