Abstract

In a digital data transmission system detection of an error in the received data causes a return error-indicating signal to be passed to the transmitter. On reception of this signal, the transmitter sends a special character repeatedly. When this is correctly received the error-indicating signal is stopped. Consequent on this cessation the transmitter sends data previously transmitted but received faulty, followed by normal traffic. In the embodiment described, under faultfree conditions parallel bit data characters are converted to serial form and transmitted. The received signals are checked for errors and passed via a first register to a second register which feeds parallel-bit data to the output. If any error is detected an error signal is returned to the transmitter, whereupon transmission of data characters is stopped and instead a special character is sent repeatedly, The error signal also enables a cyclic counter which starts stepping at character rate. If the capacity of the counter is n the number of special characters sent is a multiple of n. When a special character is recognized at the receiver the return error signal is stopped. At the transmitter this causes the cessation of transmission of special signal at the end of the current cycle of n such characters, following which n parallel-bit signals from a store, which contains data previously transmitted and received faulty, are serialized and sent to the receiver. The counter is now disabled and transmission of data characters takes place as normal.
