In a spark ignition system for a motor cycle an alternator 11 provides power through a rectifier 2 to a pair of supply lines between which the ignition coil 15 and interupter 16 are connected in series and a capacitor 22 and a switch 23 are connected in series across the supply lines. The switch can be operated either manually or automatically when the engine has started. Conveniently the switch is operated by the kickstart mechanism. A Zener diode 21 acts as a voltage regulator.
