1,136,168. Chromatographic column . ABCOR Inc. (Inc. 1966). 25 Feb., 1966 [26 Feb., 1965; 10 Sept., 1965], No. 8485/66. Headings B1F, B1L and B1X. A column for the chromatographic separation of a fluid contains separating material and means for improving the resolving power of the column including a plurality of partition elements disposed substantially transverse to the axis of the column each, element having a plurality of flow passages therein to induce lateral flow and mixing of the fluid streams passing through the column. As shown in Fig. 1, column 12 contains alternate perforated partitions 40, 42 between sections of adsorbent 14, the flow passages in partitions 40, 42 being preferably non-aligned. The partitions may also be spaced closely together with only a small gap and no adsorbent between them (Fig. 7 not shown). Partitions 40 have sealing gaskets 50 around the periphery (Fig. 3 not shown) whereas partitions 42 (Fig. 5 not shown) have spacers 54 to separate them from the wall of the column.
