Abstract
113,574. Halstead, J. F. Aug. 29, 1917. Chucks.-In chucks disengageable while in motion, the jaws are supported in a body normally rotating with the shank, relative motion between the body and shank being produced by means comprising clutch mechanism in order to operate the jaws to release the tool. The screwed end 11 of the shank 10 engages a body-part 15 secured to a tapered casing 17 in which slide spring-separated jaws 19 engaged by a disk 14 with a stem 13 sliding in the shank-end. Slidably secured to the shank by rollers 30 is a pinion 27 gearing through connected pinions 26, 24 with a loose pinion 22 carrying clutch dogs 23 engageable with clutch dogs 21 on the part 15. The spindles 25 of the pinions 26, 24 are carried by a housing 31 and an outer sleeve 33. The housing 31 and part 15 are normally separated by a spring-pressed plunger 34, the action of which is limited by a stop 39, engaging recesses in the plunger and the sleeve 33 and itself locked in position by a stud with an eccentric head 42. To clamp the tool, the casing 17 is held by hand and the part 15 screws back on the shank so that the tapered casing 17 presses the jaws 19 on the tool. To disengage, the sleeve 33 is pressed down to engage the clutch 21, 23 and at the same time held to keep the gearspindles 25 stationary. The gearing is proportioned to accelerate the body-part 15, which screws towards the end of the shank and releases the jaws. To dismantle the chuck, the casing 17 is first removed and the stud 41 is turned to withdraw the stop 39 from the sleeve 33 so that the sleeve may be moved to allow removal of the stud 41, stop 39, and plunger 34 and, afterwards, of the part 15.
