Abstract
1,135,674. Electrophotography. UNIROYAL Inc. 23 Sept., 1966 [1 Oct., 1965], No. 42443/66. Heading H1K. An electrophotographic element comprises a flexible sheet having a coating on at least one side of a mixture of a latex of a terpolymer of styrene, butadiene and an unsaturated polybasic acid and an alkali metal silicate, the coating bearing a photo-sensitive layer. Na or K silicate having an alkali metal oxide to silica weight ratio of 1 : 4 to 1 : 1À6 may be used. The latex may be made up using itaconic acid together with ammonium caseinate, animal glue or soya protein to give mechanical stability and a wax emulsion, polyethylene oxide or calcium stearate to give good handling properties. H 2 O 2 may be added to prevent discoloration. Super-calendered paper is coated with the latex to give a surface resistivity of 10<SP>4</SP>-10<SP>8</SP> ohms per square. Zinc oxide may be used in the photo-sensitive layer together with copolystyrene-butadiene and rose bengal. The flexible sheet may be paper or A1 foil.
