Abstract
1,135,127. Resistance welding electrodes. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 9 May, 1967 [21 June, 1966], No. 21531/67. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B3] Two electrical conductors, one of which is insulated, are resistance welded by first subjecting the insulated conductor to heating for sufficient time to soften the insulation, and then applying welding current. The welding apparatus comprises a welding head 10, Fig. 1, having electrodes 12, 14, the latter being connected to a control pyrometer 18 in a control unit 16 by a conductor 22. A time delay relay 20 in unit 16 is connected to the actuator switch in the welding head by a conductor 24, and to the discharge relay in the power supply by a conductor 26. Electrode 14 comprises a heater coil 32, Fig. 2, carried by a ceramic mandrel 34, and connected to conductor 22 at 36. A thermocouple 38 is also connected to conductor 22, at 40. The coil and thermocouple are assembled in a stainless steel sheath 42, which is then filled with ceramic material 44, and the sheath is connected to a metal sleeve 50 having a molybdenum tip 52 therein.
