Abstract

1,135,102. Mouthpieces for inhalation. D. H. FOTOU. 18 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 41395/66. Headings A5R and A5T. A mouthpiece for inhalation therapy comprises a body 1 including a tube having a first end 26 for insertion into a.patient's mouth and a second end 27 for connection to a ventilating machine or manually operated resuscitator, there being a tongue depressor 3 mounted on the body 1 and slidable longitudinally of the tube for adjustment to suit the patient. As shown, the tongue depressor 3 is formed on its undersurface with regular ridges and notches (4, 5) and the depressor can be moved longitudinally of the tube by turning a knob 8 which rotates a splined member (2) which engages with the undersurface. The splined member is spring-biased against a toothed clutch member (9) so that the depressor may be locked in any adjusted position. A face mask comprising a rubber pad 16 on a stiffer backing member 17 may be removably fitted to the mouthpiece and the face mask may include nose-plugs 20 and head straps 22.
