Abstract

1,134,651. Polyfluoropyridine carboxylic acids; polyfluoropyridines and lithium derivatives thereof. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 18 Nov., 1965 [7 Dec., 1964; 26 May, 1965], Nos. 49716/64 and 22396/65. Headings C2C and C2J. Compounds of the general formula wherein one of the symbols R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is -COOH whilst the other two are F, and R is F or, when R 2 is -COOH, R 4 is H, F or -COOH, are prepared by converting 2,4,6- trifluoropyridine or a tetrafluoropyridine into the corresponding lithium derivative at a low temperature, reacting this with CO 2 , and hydrolysing the resulting product. The tri- and tetrafluoropyridine starting materials are obtained by hydrogenolysis of pentafluoropyridine, 3 - chlorotetrafluoro - pyridine or 3,5 - dichlorotrifluoropyridine. 2,5,6 - Trifluoropyridine is also obtained by this method from 3-chlorotetrafluoropyridine.
