Novel compounds having the general formula wherein R 1 =H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , R 2 =H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , R 3 =H, CH 3 , C 2 H; or CH(CH 3 ) 2 and R 4 =H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 are prepared by reacting 4,5-diphenylimidazole with an easily soluble oxide and an oxide derivative taken from propylene oxide, 1,2-epoxy-2-methylbutane, 1,2- epoxy - 2 - ethylbutane, 1,2 - epoxy - 3 - methylbutane, 2,3 - epoxy - 3 - methylbutane and 2,3 - epoxy - 2,3 - dimethylbutane, in the presence of a tertiary amine taken from the class consisting of triethylamine, tributylamine, ethyldimethylamine, methyldiethylamine, pyridine, N - methylpiperidine and N - ethylpiperidine. The oxide derivative above may be replaced by a 1-halogeno-2-hydroxy compound taken from 1 -chloro-2-methyl-2-butanol, 1 - chloro - 2,5 - dimethyl - 2 - hexanol, butylene chlorohydrin, isobutylene chlorohydrin and pentylene chlorohydrin, and the reaction takes place in the presence of an alkaline substance.
