A transfer device 18 for moving a cooked patty 92 from a three-band conveyer 14 on to a toasted bun slice 94 on a chain push-bar conveyer 16 comprises a rotary plate 100 and a transfer arm 126, the plate and the arm having a reciprocable rotary action about a common vertical axis 96. Transfer device 18.-The mechanism for producing the motion of the plate 100 and arm 126 includes cams 216, 218, racks 234, 236 and gears 198, 182. Additionally the arm 126 is given a vertical reciprocating motion by a cam 214, rod 258 and a pivoted bar 260, the latter engaging a plate 202 connected to a vertical shaft 124 which carries the arm 126. A drive 90 is common to the conveyers and to the transfer device 18. Conveyers 14, 16.-Bands 34, 36, 38 of conveyer 14 pass around a wheel 40 and, for separating the patty 92 from the bands, a knife 104 having cutting edges 106, 108, 110 is provided. Conveyer 16 comprises chains 44, 46 with push bars 48 and runner bars 56, 58. Operation.-The transfer arm 126 pushes patty 92 on to plate 100 which is stationary, the arm 126 and plate 100 then carrying the patty to a position overlying the bun slice 94 and the plate returning to its original position thereby dropping the patty on to the bun slice. The arm 126 then returns to its original position and simultaneously rises before dropping behind the next patty ready to repeat the sequence.
