Abstract
1,134,114. Ship stabilizing. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. 24 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec., 1964; 18 March, 1965], No. 54810/65. Heading B7M. A ship-stabilizer of the non-activated tank type comprises a pair of tanks 1, 2, Fig. 1, which are situated adjacent the sides 3, 4 of the ship's hull and connected to each other by a duct 5, air spaces 1a, 1b above the free surfaces of water in said tanks being connected to each other by a conduit or piping 6 containing a pendulum-actuated valve 7 so as to regulate the flow of air and water from one tank to the other in response to rolling of the ship. The valve includes a rectangular valve member 8, Fig. 3, which is attached at its uppermost edge to a pivotable rod 9 carrying a simple pendulum 13 externally of the piping 6, the bob-weight 14 being movable relative to the rod 9 so as to change the periodic time as required. A ridge 12 fixed to the piping co-operates with the valvemember in controlling the flow of air from one tank to the other. The valve may be modified, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), in that the pendulum 13 is replaced by a simple pendulum (17) containing a slot (16) that engages with a downwardly-cranked portion (15) of the rod to which the valvemember is attached, the pendulum being otherwise independent of the rod. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the flow of air from one tank to the other through piping 6a is controlled by a combination of two pendulum elements 19, 20, the element 19 being supported by a pin 24 on a part of the hull and having an opening 21 therein which during operation of said element periodically comes into register with the ends of the piping, whereas the other element is supported by a pin 25 on the element 19 and has a shutter 26 that periodically obturates said opening. In yet another embodiment, Figs. 12 to 14 (not shown), the control valve comprises a simple pendulum (27) constituting per se a valve-member that periodically interrupts the flow of air from one tank to the other through piping (6b) and is lodged in a sealed housing (28) containing guide rails (30) for rollers 31 on the pendulum. In still another embodiment, Fig. 15 (not shown), the tanks are connected to each other by piping (6) that does not contain a control valve, the tank 1 being furnished with an air vent (32) controlled by a valve (A) somewhat similar to that according to Figs. 12 to 14, whereas the tank 2 is furnished with an air vent (33) controlled by a valve (B) having a pendulum type of valve-member with a partcylindrical portion engaging with arcuate guide rails.
