Abstract

[Also in Division G1] An electric toaster includes a thermostatic device comprising a primary bimetal element 3 situated near the top of the bread slice being toasted and operating primarily in response to the temperature of the bread surface and to the heat of the steam vapour rising therefrom, and a compensatory bimetal element 4 arranged immediately over the heater means of the toaster above a heat-shielding cover 9 and operating primarily in response to the temperature of the atmosphere in the toaster casing. The heat-shielding cover 9 is arranged directly over the central heating unit 10 and has a U-shaped cross-section to receive the compensatory bimetal element 4. Slits 12 are formed in the heatshielding cover 9 above the heater unit 10, and in the side 9a of the cover is a slot 13 through which the thermostat unit 2 extends. The shielding cover is made of lustred metal and is fixed to the end plates 14 and 15 of the toaster. The thermostat unit 2 activates a switching mechanism 22 by means of a connecting link bar 23 which is connected at one end to the engaging strip 7 attached to the primary bimetal element 3. The primary bimetal element is non deflectingly formed at its top with a flange 6. and is attached to the toaster by means of a support bracket 8. In one modification (Fig. 6b, not shown) the thermostat device contains a separate member (31) connecting the primary bimetal element (32) and the compensatory bimetal element (33) to form an integral unit. The thermostat device may be included in any toaster combining a breadlifting device and a switch assembly and in which bread slices are held in vertical position.
