Abstract

1,133,773. Automatic titrating. MAGYAR OPTIKAI MUVEK. 24 Nov., 1965 [24 Nov., 1964], No. 50028/65. Heading B1X. The concentration of a dissolved substance is determined by mixing a determined volume of the solution and a suitable reagent or solvent, and adding the mixture to a reagent, solvent or diluent until a selected physical property of the mixture so obtained reaches a pre-determined value, the said concentration being determined by an automatic method, known per se, from the quantity of mixture so added, and the data obtained being signalled, written, summed or printed. The predetermined value is set or regulated by measuring the same physical property of a standard solution in the same manner, and, if desired, the process is repeated according to a timepattern control. As shown, an automatic sampling pipette 2 feeds a definite quantity of a sample from a container 1, or of standard solution from a container 20, to a chamber 3 where reagents and/or solvents are added by a pipette system 5, to produce a solution which is filled into an automatic burette 6. The automatic pipette system 5 supplies a further reagent and/or solvent to the measuring chamber 7, which is provided with a detector 8, which may be the electrode circuit of an automatic titrating apparatus, or a flame photometer device. The burette 6 injects solution into the chamber 7 until stopped by the automatic titration apparatus when the end-point is reached, and a signal proportional to the volume of solution so delivered fed to signal converting, response, recording and calculating units 9, 10, 11, 12 and a printing indicating and reporting mechanism 13, e.g. an electrical typewriting or calculating machine. A control device 15 programmes the operations. Examples describe (1) the titration of a solution containing iron ions, which is mixed with water and sulphuric acid, manganous sulphate and phosphoric acid solutions in the chamber 3 and titrated into potassium permanganate solution in the chamber 7, the end-point being determined by an electrode system; (2) the testing of blood serum, which is mixed with distilled water in the chamber 3 and supplied by the burette 6 into distilled water in the chamber 7, 'the contents of which are fed to the sprayer of a flame photometer until a predetermined emission intensity is reached.
