Aerating; p l a n t. - An aerating-tank for treating sewage and other impure liquids consists of a long narrow channel provided with longitudinal air-diffusers which are arranged along the sides or the middle. To cause variation in the velocity of the liquid, the channel may be of varying cross-section, being preferably narrow towards the ends and wide at the intermediate part. In the tank shown, a spiral channel o is form by a spiral partition 2 arranged in a circular or polygonal outer wall 1, the channel leading from the inlet 8 to an outlet 9 in connexion with a settling-chamber 4. The diffusers 3 are arranged near the sides at the inlet and outlet, and at the middle in the remainder of the channel. The floor 2<x> of the channel slopes towards the diffusers. Baffles, such as transverse partitions 6 having vertical gaps or slots 7 arranged over the diffusers, are provided. The baffles may be replaced or aided by transverse diffusers. The feed-pipe 9 for the chamber 4 communicates with a depending pipe 10, sludge settling in the steep bottom of the chamber and the clear liquid flowing over the weir 11. The bottom of the chamber communicates through an air-lift pipe 13 with the inlet 8. In a modification, the tank is formed with a number of sinuous parallel channels.
