Abstract

1,133,256. Fuel cells. DEUTSCHE AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN ZU BERLIN. 18 May, 1966, No. 22100/66. Heading H1B. An electrochemical fuel cell contains a liquid fuel electrolyte mixture and has a plurality of fuel electrodes and oxygen electrodes, the electrodes being made of carbon, and arranged alternately and separated only by ion-exchange members without a free intermediate space being formed, the liquid fuel electrolyte mixture either being in (a) a separate chamber into which the fuel electrodes open or with which the fuel electrodes are connected via canals or wicks or (b) in hollow spaces within the electrodes. Fig. 1 shows a fuel cell having ring-shaped fuel and oxygen electrodes 1 and 3 respectively separated by ion exchange membranes 2. A screw 4 and two plates 5 hold the electrodes and membranes in a rigid stack. The screw 4 is provided with a cavity 6 which is closed by plug screw 7, the cavity 6 and a space 8 surrounding the screw containing a fuel electrolyte mixture 9. In Fig. 5 fuel electrodes 1 and the inner oxygen electrodes 3 are provided with cavities 24 into which fuel electrolyte mixture can be supplied through channels 25. To avoid drying out of the ion exchange membranes where they contact the oxygen electrodes, hygroscopic substances, e.g. lithium compounds are provided. The electrodes may be arranged in a sleeve which has venting openings in the region of the oxygen electrodes.
