Abstract
905,199. Fuel cells. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 11, 1960 [Jan. 22, 1959], No. 876/60. Class 53. A bi-polar electrode comprises a body of carbonaceous material with inlets formed in the body such that one reactant gas diffuses out of one face and the other reactant gas diffuses out of the other face. In one form (Fig. 9) parallel bores 52, 54 adjacent the relevant faces are provided and in various modifications two bodies are united to a third (impermeable) member to give a similar arrangement. In one embodiment (Fig. 15, not shown) the two outside bodies of the three referred to above have grooves and the gas passages are closed by a further plate, one on each side. Fig. 3 shows a further modification with carbon plates 24, 26 and impervious barrier 28, the whole constituting two separate half cells, which are used with terminating half cells to produce a series connected battery.
