Abstract

1,133,091. Coupling arrangements for A.C. networks. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 Sept., 1966 [5 Oct., 1965], No. 42219/65. Heading H2H. In an A.C. system comprising power sources 1<SP>1</SP> , 2<SP>1</SP> , loads 15, 16, bus-bars 12, 13, circuitbreakers 7... 10 and a transmission line formed by two parallel feeders 23, 24, a coupling 11 is inserted to prevent the synchronous machines in the sources 11, 2<SP>1</SP> from falling out of step when an earth fault occurs at point 14 and the power flow through line 23, 24 is normally from bus-bar 12 to 13. The coupling 11 is of the type comprising a series inductance and capacitance combination resonant at normal network operation to present a predetermined low impedance and detuned automatically by a predetermined excess current which saturates a reactor connected in series with a resistor across the capacitor, Fig. 1 (not shown). The value of the resistor is chosen so that during fault conditions it imposes on the machine(s) in the source 1<SP>1</SP> an additional power demand to slow the machine(s) down simultaneously with the machine(s) in source 2<SP>1</SP>, the latter effect being due to source 2<SP>1</SP> having to supply during fault conditions a greater than normal proportion of the power required by the load 16. The coupling operation is arranged so that it presents a sufficiently low impedance during the "swing" conditions following fault removal to maintain stability in the system and prevent pole slipping. Couplings may be connected at other points in the system as required and may be of the type wherein the resistor is in series with a spark gap or surge diverter instead of a saturable reactor. Use may be made of various components of the system, e.g. machines, transformers, lines or cables, to contribute towards the inductance and capacitance of the coupling, whose power demand to slow down the machine(s) in source 1<SP>1</SP> may be provided or supplemented by the hysteresis effect in a reactor core.
