Abstract
1,132,717. Thermal barrier for electric cable. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 10 Nov., 1965 [19 Nov., 1964], No. 47741/65. Heading H1A. Insulated conductors 1 are surrounded by a heat-insulating layer 2, composed of foam either attached to sheathing member 3 before it is wrapped around the conductors or generated in situ when heat from the extruded polymer jacket 4 causes a suitable composition to foam. In either case layer 2 protects the conductors 1 from the heat of the extruded jacket 4. The foamable composition may comprise fine polymer particles containing a blowing agent and a binder such as latex. A thin plastic or metal substrate, suitably of copper or aluminium, may be coated on at least one side with a thin layer of foamable material and wrapped around the conductors prior to extrusion of jacket 4. Polymers which may be used include polystyrene, polyacrylic and polymethacrylic compounds, polyvinyl ethers, polyvinyl esters of organic acids, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyisobutylene, polymers of alpha alkyl derivatives of styrene, ring substituted derivatives of styrene such as the chlorostyrenes, acrylic and methacrylic esters such as ethyl acrylate and propyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, alpha beta ethylenic. ally unsaturated dibasic acids and their derivatives and diolefins. Preferred compositions contain a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile or a copolymer of methy methacrylate and methyl acrylate. Suitable blowing or foaming agents include pentane, hexane, heptane, cyclopentane, cyclopentadiene and neopentane, the last being preferred. An adhesive applied to the sheathing member before the foamable coating or outer polymer jacket is preferably a copolymer of ethylene and an acidic comonomer. Specific acidic comonomers which may be used are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, itaconic acid, maleic anhydride, monomethyl maleate, monoethyl maleate, monomethyl fumarate and monoethyl fumarate. Exemplary compositions are given. A test procedure for thermal barriers is described and quantitative comparisons made between the performances of foamed compounds and those of solid substances in use.
