Abstract

1,132,708. Proximity detectors. WILMOTBREEDEN Ltd. 7 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965; 1 April, 1966], Nos. 43853/65 and 14596/66. Heading H3B. A capacitance type machine tool guard comprises a strip detector electrode mounted in a separately energized channel-section screen electrode to reduce the effect of capacity between the detector electrode and the machine parts. As shown, Fig. 3, a detector electrode loop 14, and surrounding screen 15 are connected by a coaxial cable to the capacitance sensing unit, the screen being energized from a tapping on supply transformer 22, and the detector electrode fed from higher voltage through a variable capacitor 27 which is adjusted so that there is no input to the amplifier 26 in the absence of a body in the guard area. The output from the sensing unit is fed to a control arrangement such as that described in Specification 1,106,456. The capacitor guard is described in association with a power-press, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown); a riveting press, Fig. 4 (not shown); a moulding machine, Fig. 6 (not shown); and associated with the guard gates of a machine tool, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown).
