A method of producing enzymes capable of lysing the cells of micro-organisms comprises culturing micro-organisms belonging to the genus Flavobacterium in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions at a temperature of 25‹ to 37‹ C. and a pH of from 5À0 to 8À5. The enzymes may be used as the supernatant solution obtained by centrifuging the medium or may be precipitated by ammonium sulphate or acetone, re-dissolved and purified by dialysis. They are capable of dissolving bacteria, moulds, yeasts, actinomycetes and fungi imperfecti.
