Abstract

1,132,605. Optical systems. M.M. SHAFIK. Oct.29, 1965 [June 27, 1965], No.39971/65. Heading G2J. An optical system comprises a concave paraboloidal, ellipsoidal or spherical wide angle reflecting objective Me, Fig. 6, which in profile viewed along its optical axis 1-1 is not a complete circle, and a lens system L whose axis is coaxial with that of the reflecting objective Me (or such axis as deviated by an intervening plane mirror) for forming an image in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens system L of an object lying in a plane parallel to the optical axis of the reflecting objective Me. As shown the mirror Me is ellipsoidal with foci F 1 , F 2 , respectively coinciding with the centre of a spherical protective shield SL 1 , and the aperture area of the lens L, so that limiting rays R, R 2 , enclosing an angle α are accepted by lens L within an angle # and produce images at points P 3 , P 5 , respectively in the image plane S. In a modification Fig. 8 (not shown) a plane mirror (M 3 ) deviates the optical axis of mirror (Me) through 90 degrees and lens (L) is placed at the same relative position on such deviated axis as it is in Fig. 6. In further forms the mirrors are spherical instead of ellipsoidal. For reproduction on a spherically (X 1 <SP>1</SP>) Fig. 7 (not shown) or cylindrically (X<SP>1</SP>) curved screen an arrangement similar to that of Fig. 6 is provided except that a second ellipsoidal mirror, similar to the first, is provided on the opposite side of the lens L, with the second foci F 2 of both mirrors coincident. The optical system may be used for photography or projection.
