1,132,479. Ultrasonic inspection devices. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 3 Aug., 1966 [3 Aug., 1965], No. 34742/66. Heading H4D. Ultrasonic test apparatus comprises a base with an upwardly extending spindle carrying a specimen-supporting table, and a transducer supported above the table by a carriage, means being provided for moving the table in a horizontal plane relative to the spindle and for moving the carriage along a horizontal guideway mounted on a vertical arm attached to the base. In the Fig. 2 embodiment adjustably mounted transmitting/receiving transducer 35 is coupled to specimen 45 on motor-driven rotatable levelling table 1 and can be moved radially of the table by hand wheel 37 for scanning the specimen in a polar co-ordinate system by a pulse-echo method in which the relative amplitudes and time positions of received signals are determined from an oscilloscope display. In a modification a second transducer 63 is used for transmission and transducer 35 receives ultrasonic energy scattered by the specimen. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), table 1 is replaced by a motor-driven carriage (77) which together with the motion of transducer 35 permits scanning of the specimen in a rectangular coordinate system.
