Abstract

1,132,130. Measuring linear movement. ROTHEROE & MITCHELL Ltd. 20 July, 1967 [27 Sept., 1966], No. 43169/66. Heading G4H. The linear displacement of a member is measured by a wheel 1 connected to the member through a tape or strip 4, the wheel having an optical encoder 2 on its shaft generating pulses which are counted to indicate the displacement. In the form shown, the tape is attached to the moving member at one end, and tension is applied to the other. The tape is held against the wheel by a pressure roller 7. In another form the tape is endless and runs over rollers surrounding the wheel. The tape touches the wheel at one point and is gripped between it and the moving member. The pulses from the encoder pass to a counter which counts up or down according to the direction of movement. The value in the counter is indicated on a bank of lamps. There may be a number of moving members, each with an encoder as described. One of them is a reference member, the positions of the others being compared with the position of the reference member to light " high," " level " and " low " lamps.
