Abstract

1,131,604. Electrostatic precipitators. G. A. MESSEN-JASCHIN. 4 Feb., 1966 [5 Feb., 1965], No. 4904/66. Heading B2J. An electrostatic precipitator for treating dust-laden air comprises a cylindrical collector electrode 13 surrounding a coaxially mounted, rotatable ionising electrode assembly 18 consisting of a supporting rod 19 carrying a plurality of radially disposed sharp electrodes 20 connected to a source of high voltage, the rod 19 being connected via a shaft 23 to a driving mechanism. The electrode 13 is mounted between plates 11, 16 of insulating material and is made of a rough or porous electrically conductive material such as metal wool. A thin-walled metal cylinder 14 surrounding the electrode 13 acts as a support and is earthed through a plate 15. Holes 17 are provided in the plates 11, 16 for the passage of dust-laden air and clean air respectively. The rod 18 may be mounted directly in the plates 11, 16 with lubricating rings 21 surrounding it or bearing bushes may be provided. The bottom end of the shaft rests upon a thrust bearing 24, 25 disposed on a metal rail 26 connected to a high voltage generator. In operation, any dust particles tending to deposit on the electrodes 20 are ejected by the action of centrifugal force due to rotation of the assemlbly 18. A number of collector electrodes with their associated ionising electrode assemblies may be adjacent one another and a common drive may be provided for all the ionising electrode assemblies.
