Abstract

1,131,251. Carboxymethyl cellulose. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 29 Sept., 1965, No. 41392/65. Heading C3A. An alkali metal salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is made by etherifying alkali cellulose in a 2-phase liquid system containing a water miscible aliphatic alcohol, e.g. ethanol, one phase containing aqueous alcohol and the other containing an inert water-immiscible liquid (e.g. benzene)/alcohol mixture, treating the resulting CMC with a bleaching agent to reduce its viscosity, and recovering the alkali metal CMC salt product. Etherification may be effected using wood pulp made alkali with NaOH, and treated with monochloracetic acid. Bleaching agents listed are hydrogen peroxide and the free acid or alkali metal salt forms of peroxides, perborates, periodates, hypohalites or chlorites and they may be used singly or in admixture. Chlorites may be prepared in situ by passing gaseous Cl 2 through the alkaline etherified slurry.
