Abstract

In a seal comprising a flexible flange 14 having a sealing lip 24 urged radially by a garter spring 22 located in a groove 20 in an enlarged portion of the flange, the opening of the groove is at the side of the seal unexposed to the sealed medium, and is significantly narrower than the crosssectional diameter of the spring. The flange 14 extends from an L-section member 10 bonded to a metal casing 12. The seal may be of natural or synthetic rubber or plastics material and may be an internal or external lip type.
