Abstract

1,131,061. Purifying quartz. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 28 Oct., 1965 [9 Nov., 1964], No. 45643/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] Quartz crystals are heated to a temperature between 350‹ and 550‹ C. in an electric field of at least 400 volts/cm. applied between crystal faces while maintaining the quartz in an atmosphere having a water vapour pressure of less than 10<SP>-5</SP> mm. Hg., measured at 25‹ C. The quartz is preferably heated for at least 10 hours. The atmosphere may be air at a pressure below 10<SP>-3</SP> mm. Hg. or a gas selected from neon, argon, nitrogen, and oxygen. The quartz may be annealed after treatment by heating to at least 400‹ C. for at least 5 hours in the absence of an electric field.
