Abstract

1,131,010. Cross-linking polymers. RAYCHEM CORP. 13 June, 1967 [23 June, 1966], No. 27149/67. Heading C3P. Hydrogen-containing polymers are crosslinked by incorporating into the polymer one or more photo-active agents selected from t-butyl hypochlorite, oxalyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, thionyl chloride, sulphuryl bromide, thionyl bromide, phosgene or carbonyl bromide, and subjecting the polymer to ultraviolet irradiation. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, copolymers of ethylene with vinyl acetate or ethyl acrylate, polyvinyl acetate and polymethyl acrylate. The agent may be incorporated in the polymer by diffusion. After irradiation some polymers are found to contain acid halide groups, and these may be further cross-linked by reaction by a difunctional compound, e.g. ethylenediamine, tetramethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. Articles treated in accordance with the invention may be given elastic memory properties. Examples describe the irradiation of (1) polyethylene and phosgene, (2) polyethylene and oxalyl chloride, (3) polybutene-1 and oxalyl chloride or phosgene, (4) polyethylene and t-butyl hypochlorite or sulphuryl chloride, (5) copolymers of ethylene with ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate or propylene and oxalyl chloride, (6) polyethylene and oxalyl chloride followed by further reaction with ethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine or ethylene glycol, (7) a polyethylene bottle and oxalyl chloride and (8) a polyethylene tube and oxalyl chloride.
