Abstract

1,130,726. Heat-treating crank-shafts. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Feb. 9, 1966 [May 6, 1965], No.5648/66. Heading C7N. Crank-shaft pin and main journals (30) are induction hardened by moving the crank-shaft 16 to an operative station B below the liquid level in a quench tank 10, e.g. bringing it step-by-step from an entry (and removal) station A along the lower run on guide rails 70 of a conveyer mechanism 15, lifting it above the liquid level, e.g. by engaging it at the free ends of arms 32 which swing about a shaft 33 by means of a power cylinder 35 pivotally connected to a support 37 and a lever 41, locating on a pin or main journal an inductor 25 suspended above the quench tank, e. g. from arms 23 pivoted on pins 22 in an assembly 18 supported on a platform 17 on the tank 10, to follow the path of the journal while the crank-shaft is rotated e.g. from a drive housing 50 with the inductor supported by the journal, returning the crank-shaft to the operative station B after induction heating of the journal and moving it e. g. held in an outward recess 81 of a pair of carriage plates 80 on the conveyer mechanism 15 to a removal station A above the liquid level in the tank while again rotating it, e. g. by an auxiliary conveyer chain 88 driving roller 92 which contact the crank-shaft. The inductor housing 18 is movable on the platform 17 along the axis of the crank-shaft to align it with each of the journals.
