Abstract
1,130,208. Disc brakes. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. 27 Jan., 1966 [1 Feb., 1965], No. 3752/66. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the kind having a floating yoke surrounding both a fixed frame 11, in apertures 13 of which pads 14, 14A are guided, and a peripheral portion of a disc 10 engaged by the pads on supply of fluid to a cylinder 23 formed in the yoke, the yoke consists of four separate elements, viz: thrust and reaction elements 19, 20, and connecting elements 21, the elements being connected together by pins 22 held in place by split-pins 30, whereby dismantling and assembly are facilitated. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, the reaction member is arranged at each end with a clearance J between frame members 12 but cannot move circumferentially when assembled with pad 14A since lugs 28 of the reaction member fit in opposed cut-out portions 18 in the four corners of the pad backing-plate. The thrust member is also held against circumferential movement, by engagement of an extension of the piston 24 in an aperture in the backing plate of pad 14. Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) disclose alternative arrangements in which the clearances J are replaced, respectively, by clearances (J<SP>1</SP>) between the lugs 28 and the cut-out portions 18, and by clearances (J<SP>11</SP>) between the edges of the pad 14A and the frame members 12. In a second embodiment (Figs. 8-10, not shown) a comparatively large clearance (G) is provided at each end of the pad (14A) which allows the drag force acting on this pad to move the reaction member circumferentially relative to the thrust member, causing deformation of the rectangular parallelogram formed by the pivots (22), whereby a moderate self-servo effect is achieved, the principal effect of which is said to be a substantial reduction in fluid displacement required to operate the brake. Return springs (32) centralize the pad (14A) and the reaction member on brake release.
