Delta modulation pulses, produced for example as described in Specification 1,106,042 are applied to a coding circuit comprising a counter which is stepped up or down by the pulses, means for translating the counter contents into a marking on one of a number e.g. 13 of leads to select a corresponding frequency for transmission, and means for subtracting from the counter a number corresponding to the frequency transmitted. Pulses are supplied to the counter over a sampling period. Several different codes are used to cater for different rates of charge of the input signal. In the lowest range, for example, frequencies F 1 to F 13 correspond to increments of + 12, + 8, + 6, + 4, + 3, + 2, 0, - 2, - 3 . . . -12 When F 1 or F 13 is transmitted, a shift to the next higher code is made, this code being one in which F 7 still corresponds to 0, but the other frequencies correspond to larger increments e.g. ranging from 16 to 3. Similar shifts up are made whenever F 1 or F 13 , signifying the largest possible increment in any code, is transmitted. Conversely, when the variation in a sampling period is less than the minimum increment of the code in force, F 7 is transmitted and a shift down is made. Whenever a shift up or down occurs, the translating matrix is modified or the attenuation of the input signal is altered correspondingly. The receiver comprises filters corresponding to F 1 -F 13 and a circuit which delivers to one of two outputs (positive and negative increments) a train of pulses in each sampling period, the number of pulses corresponding to the frequency received and the code in force. Code shifts up are made upon reception of F 1 or F 13 and a shift down is made on reception of F 7 , except when the lowest code is in force. The receiver is synchronized to the transmitter after transmission of F 7 over a number of sampling periods corresponding to the number of codes. The pulses delivered by this circuit constitute the original delta modulation and are demodulated by apparatus as described in Specification 1,106,042.
