Abstract
1,129,769. Heat storing apparatus. COMSTOCK & WESTCOTT Inc. 3 May, 1967 [8 June, 1966], No. 20577/67. Heading F4U. In heat storage apparatus of the type which employs a material, such as an alkali metal hydroxide, having an affinity for CO 2 disposed in a container having an air space, a breather tube connecting the air space with the ambient atmosphere comprises two tubes of different diameters, the larger tube being connected with the container and having its outer end closed except for an opening which is sealed around the smaller tube. The material creeps up and solidifies on the larger tube only thereby preventing blockage of the smaller tube. As shown, the larger tube 36 depends into the material 23 and the smaller tube 37 extends into the air space 24. The lower part of tube 36 has perforations 40 and is surrounded by a cylinder 41; carbonates tend to accumulate on tube 36 and cylinder 41 and are removed as the level of material 23 rises and falls in operation of the heater. In one modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the larger tube terminates at the container wall and the smaller tube terminates at the outer end of the larger tube. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the perforated lower end of tube 36 is replaced by a separate tube which is supported and heated by the elements used to heat material 23.
