Abstract
1,129,583. Photo-electric torque measuring apparatus. SAUNDERS ROE DEVELOPMENT Ltd. March 15,1966 [April 15,1965], No.46507/67. Divided out of 1,129, 582. Heading G1A. The torque of a shaft is measured using a photo-electric system sensitive to the amount of angular twist between two positions along the length of the shaft. The shaft 1 is mounted to rotate in bearing 13 associated with a cylindrical housing 12 fixed in space by its connection to supports 15. Inside the housing 12, is mounted a self-luminous light source 4, comprising a phosphor-coated envelope containing radio-active gas to activate the phosphor. The inner wall of the housing carries a single photo-cell 25, photo-conductive or photovoltaic, mounted to receive light from the source. Interposed between source and detector are two cylindrical skirts 10, 24, each having a series of equally spaced slots. The skirt 24 is attached to the shaft within the housing 12 and skirt 10 by means of tube 5 at a location spaced from the housing. During rotation of the shaft, any torque will cause misalignment between the slots of the skirts 10, 24 as they pass between source and detector, resulting in a decrease from the high intensity level obtained with correct alignment. A galvanometer 19 displays the r. m. s. value of the alternating photo-cell output which is representative of the torque. Modifications are possible e. g. more than one source can be used, or an annular source, or one coincident with the axis of the shaft. Reference photo-cells may be provided to compensate for source intensity decreases and temperature variations. The apparatus can be adapted for use as a tachometer while giving torque readings so that power measurement is also possible.
